The Energy and Carbon Management Commission has proposed fining Noble Energy, a Chevron subsidiary, $1.53 million for its role in the oil spill that took place in Weld County last April.
The massive spill in Galeton was the largest in recent Colorado history. The Bishop well incident resulted in more than a million gallons of oil, natural gas, polluted water and chemicals being spewed for nearly 4 days. The resulting plume contaminated crops, homes and an elementary school a mile away. Galeton Elementary School will need to be monitored for years.
Even after accusing them of violating six oil and gas regulations during a June 2025 hearing, the ECMC will only charge Chevron 90% of the proposed $1.7M fine in exchange for agreeing to settle.
With toxic materials being blown onto land and property across a 1.5 mile radius from the wellhead, the true costs of this incident are immeasurable. Galeton residents and Colorado tax payers will pay for this incident for many years to come. Meanwhile, Chevron reported $28 billion in earnings just during the last three months of 2025.
We can’t afford to continue letting oil and gas companies profit while we face the astronomical costs of fracking. Our communities deserve better. Please join us in signing and sharing the Open Letter of Support to Stop the Expansion of fracking.
