We’ve Entered the Era of Water Bankruptcy 💧

The United Nations just released a report that should shake us all: we’ve officially entered an “Era of Global Water Bankruptcy.”

This isn’t hyperbole. 75% of humanity now lives in water-insecure countries. Half of the world’s major lakes are shrinking. 70% of our aquifers are in decline. We’ve lost 30% of our glaciers since 1970.

The UN is clear: in many places, we’ve damaged our water systems “beyond realistic prospects of full recovery.”

And here in Colorado? We’re making it worse. Fracking consumed over 11 billion gallons of water in 2025 alone, with each well consuming millions of gallons we’ll never get back. Add 2,219 oil spills that threaten our remaining water, and we’re accelerating our own bankruptcy.

The planet is overdrawn. Colorado is writing checks our water systems can’t cash.

But we can stop this. We can stop new permits by 2030 and protect what water we have left for our kids, our communities, and our future.

This isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s for our survival.

Let’s act like it.

In solidarity,
