Salon duc Tape: Fort Collins Plastic Pollution Initiative Roundtable

Salon duc Tape – Fort Collins Plastic Pollution Initiative Roundtable – February 12th , 2021
Should Fort Collins ban plastic bags and charge a fee for paper bags provided by grocery stores?
An initiative will likely appear on the municipal ballot this April asking Fort Collins voters whether they approve of an ordinance banning plastic bags and charging a 12 cent fee on paper bags at large grocery stores within city limits. The initiative seeks to address the problem of macroplastic pollution, but are there devils in the details?
The salon on February 12th will feature a roundtable discussion on the ballot initiative between three members of the Fort Collins Sustainability Group (FCSG): Rick Casey, EL Hudetz, and Emily Gallichotte. Rick will provide basic information on the general problem of plastic pollution and what the ordinance will accomplish if approved. EL will argue for a yes vote on the initiative. Emily will argue for a no vote, unless council modifies the initiative before referring it to the voters on February 16th – an outcome that appears unlikely at this point.
Rick Casey has been a member of the FCSG Steering Committee since 2019. He has been active in the fight against fracking for many years, both in Lafayette and here in Ft. Collins as a member of the steering committee of the Larimer Alliance. EL Hudetz has been a member of the FCSG Steering Committee since 2018. She is a long-time local environmental activist, starting with the fight against burning hazardous waste at the Holnam cement plant in the 1990s. More recently, she was a leader in getting the Fort Collins fracking moratorium passed in 2013. Emily Gallichotte has been active with the FCSG since the fall of 2020. She is also involved with the Ft. Collins Chapter of Democratic Socialists of America and Food Not Bombs. She is a regular salon attendee and loves learning about new topics presented here.
