¿Qué es el fracking?
La fracturación hidráulica, más conocida como fracking, es un método para extraer petróleo y gas natural de la roca a gran profundidad. En este proceso, se perfora un pozo de al menos una milla hasta la capa de roca de esquisto donde se encuentran atrapados el petróleo y el gas, y luego se perfora horizontalmente por varios kilómetros. Luego, se inyectan grandes cantidades de agua, arena y productos químicos en estas formaciones a presiones lo suficientemente altas como para fracturar la roca, permitiendo que el petróleo y el gas, antes atrapados, fluyan a la superficie a través del pozo, mientras que la arena aguanta abiertas las grietas.

What is Fracking?
Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as fracking, is a method for extracting oil and natural gas from shale rock deep underground. For each well, a wellbore is drilled a mile or more down to the shale rock layer where the oil and gas are trapped, and then horizontally for up to several miles. Large quantities of water, sand, and chemicals are blasted into these formations at pressures high enough to fracture the rock, allowing the once-trapped oil and gas to flow to the surface through the wellbore while the sand props the cracks open.
