Salon duc Tape – Rethinking U.S. Foreign Policy – April 9th, 2021
How would U.S. foreign policy need to change to address threats like pandemics, climate chaos, and nuclear war?
At the salon on April 9th, Ron Forthofer of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center will give a presentation on US foreign policy since the end of WWII, focusing particularly on the period following the demise of the Soviet Union and the events of 9/11/01. He will point out that since the early 1990s, the US has increasingly turned to the ‘War’ Department as well as to the CIA and similar groups instead of relying on the State Department when dealing with other countries. Ron will argue that the effects of this militaristic approach to achieve US imperial and corporate interests have been devastating to much of the world and incredibly costly to the US public as well. The major worldwide threats facing us now, such as pandemics, climate chaos and nuclear war, require an immediate and dramatic change in US foreign policy. He will offer ideas on policy changes and some suggested lobbying ideas. Sue Ellen Klein of Partners for Peace will conclude the presentation with some foreign policy perspectives offered by current civil society initiatives.
Ron is a retired professor of biostatistics, having taught at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston. After retiring, he became an activist for peace and social justice. Ron also ran for Congress and for Governor of Colorado as a Green Party candidate.
