The Fort Collins Sustainability Group is appreciative of the City of Fort Collins’ Building Energy and Water Scoring Program (benchmarking), in which owners of commercial buildings greater than 5,000 square feet have been measuring and reporting their energy and water use since March, 2020. Colorado recently passed the HB 21-1286, Energy Performance for Buildings, sponsored by Fort Collins Representative Cathy Kipp, which will take benchmarking to the next level of performance standards for buildings greater than 50,000 square feet initially. This will help both building owners save money and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their buildings. This aligns well with both the State’s Green House Gas Reduction Roadmap as well as the City’s Our Climate Future Plan.
We ask that the City convene a group to discuss a plan for how we design and implement building performance standards for all buildings covered in our benchmarking program so that we continue to lead the state and meet our climate goals. We look forward to hearing back from you concerning this request.
